What does Terahertz Imaging mean in English?
Terahertz spectroscopy methods may improve the accuracy rate of burn diagnostics. The terahertz part of the electromagnetic spectrum (frequencies between 100 GHz and 10 THz) is highly absorbed by water molecules, so terahertz imaging is sensitive to the water content of tissue. Further, terahertz wavelengths are about the same size as discrete normal skin structures, such as the microvasculature, sweat glands, and hair follicles. The more of these structures that survive the burn injury, the more likely the wound will heal.
In studies combining these terahertz spectroscopy imaging modalities, researchers believe they have improved the ability to differentiate severe burns that will require surgical intervention from partial thickness burns that will heal with supportive care.
